But the diagnosis was not good. My laptop died after my trip back to St. John’s in April. What happened was that I was forced to put my Algorithms book ~1500 pages into my bookbag to meet the weight requirements for my checked luggage. I think I squished my laptop to death. Today I opened up the laptop to take a closer look at it. I tracked the problem down to the north bridge chip on the motherboard. Somewhere under that chip there is a bad connection. The good news is that I found the problem, the bad news that I know I can’t fix it myself. That leaves me with only one way to get my laptop operational again: order a replacement motherboard online. Lucky me, they’re available. So I bought one on ebay.
