Slogging through

I continue to be amazed at just how painful it is to move now that we have ‘stuff’ and a kid.  Even with us selling off 1/2 the stuff we own and throwing out 1/2 of the rest it is a very different process than when we moved to Vancouver in 2006 or to Calgary in 2010.

This time we are booking a moving company to handle the bulk of moving all the stuff and will be driving ourselves.

The logistics of all this is painful.  Quotes for moving are all over the place – anywhere from $2000 to $7000.  Some are based on weight, some by # of rooms, and others by cubic foot so it’s impossible to compare.  Scheduling the move day and transportation leaves us with days where we will have no beds to sleep on and will have to hotel it.

Trying to find an apartment to rent when we land in Ottawa is tough from 3000km away.  We’re not comfortable signing a 1 year agreement sight unseen so that leaves us with the option of leaving here with no confirmed house to live in when we get there.  Luckily there are a boat load of apartments available for immediate move-in and that looks like it will continue to be the case for a while.

Packing a house into essentials that need to move with us in the car vs. what we can do without for 2 weeks vs what isn’t worth taking with us is a challenge.

Moving bigger ticket items on Kijiji is proving slow.  Beds, couches, tables and shelves don’t have a lot of buyers anxious to purchase.  It’s going to be hard to have everything sold by the time we have to pack the moving truck.

I’m glad we had 60 days to schedule all this.  we are now less than 4 weeks away from the move and I really don’t know how we would have been able to pull all this together any quicker.
