This past week has been one of the most stressful in many years. I do not recommend buying a new house, while at the same time trying to backfill for three of my senior team members who have successively left the company.
New house: we got what seems like an unbelievable deal on a house. It is closer to work – 5km, easily within biking distance. In a nice older neighbourhood with trees. A short walk to the grocery store, and it is small enough to not be excessive for the three of us. Along with buying the house we added in a $15k renovation budget on the mortgage so, I’ve got some manual labor in my future to replace a kitchen and re-do the floors. We got a quick possession date and should get the keys in about 2 weeks (same day that school starts)! Lots of work to do in the coming months for updating things and moving all our stuff.
Work has never been this stressful or exciting. Over the last 6 weeks or so, 3 people more senior than me have left the company leaving a vacuum of unfilled leadership roles. I’ve taken the opportunity to provide as much help as I possibly can to backfill all the work that needs to be done. As a result my days have gone from being nearly void of meetings and totally focused on writing code, to a steady stream of interviews and planning. It’s been a crazy few weeks of not knowing what is going to happen every day. The learning opportunity has been amazing.
